World-Famous Japanese Modernized Traditional Craft, Nambu Ironware
Have you heard of Nambu Ironware? Nambu Ironware, also know as Nambu Tekki, is one of the traditional crafts of Japan. It's getting popular worldwide.
What's Nambu Ironware
Nambu Ironware, is a 400-year old ironware technique from iron-rich Iwate Prefecture. Although such ironware has once been faded away in the traditional Japanese lifestyle, artisans continue to refine their craft to create new forms of beauty. In recent years, Nambu Ironware has experienced a resurgence in popularity due to consumers’ increasing preference for natural and hand-made products. The trend began when upscale tea salons in France and Belgium began ordering colorful, custom-made teapots from Nambu Tekki artisans and continued to spread throughout Europe and the United States. Finally, it has come back home to Japan for reappraisal.
Here's how it's made.
Nambu ironware is said to have started around the middle of the 17th century, when the Nambu clan, who were ruling the current northern part of Iwate prefecture, built Morioka castle and invited Imoji and Kamashi artisans from places such as Kyoto to have them make Buddhist altar articles, armor, and tea ceremony kettles as part of their plan to revitalize the city and promote cultural activities. With the rich natural resources of the land and the support of the domain leaders, Nambu ironware soon became the local specialty of the area. It came to be cherished as a gift to feudal lords.
Modern taste Nambu Ironware
Although there used to be only black Nambu Ironware in the past, a manufacturer has found the way to color those ironware after three years of the experiment. Since then, Nambu Ironware has become very colorful and popular in Japan and the world, especially the tea pots.
Japanese handmade crafts have always received international acclaim for their fine quality and simple beauty. Japan’s long tradition of crafting everything from swords, cutting knives, and ceramics to fabrics and woodwork has had a tremendous influence on the world in areas as distinct as cooking and design. Nambu Tekki is an example of one such craft.
