Oyako Day In Japan

Japan has many days to celebrate different things, some of which seem to be trivial at first thought. But in fact, it turns out to be more valuable than anything. Family bond is an example.

Oyako Day In Japan

Want to celebrate your relationship with your parent or child? Why not take a leaf out of Japan’s book and celebrate Oyako Day (Parent-and-Child Day)? Read on to find out how you can enhance family ties.

When is Oyako Day celebrated?
Index title www.oyako.org
It is celebrated on the 4th Sunday of July because Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of May and 3rd Sunday of June respectively. Trust the logical Japanese to pay attention to details and choose a date that will be easy to remember!

Who founded Oyako Day?
Photographer couple Bruce and Yoshiko Osborn has been photographing thousands of parent-child pairs since 1982. In July 2003, they decided to promote the 4th Sunday as Oyako Day so that people would be prompted to commemorate their vital relationships with their parents or children.

What are some of the couple’s memorable works?

Mr and Mrs Osborn have shown us how children are inspired to follow their parents’ footsteps and embark on the same profession. They have photographed people from a wide spread of jobs ranging from kabuki artists to rock musicians and even Buddhist monks!

How do Japanese people celebrate Oyako Day?
Easy. They just march down to any of 100 photo studios — 75 of which are associated with the Japan Professional Photographers Society — to have their family portrait taken. So why don’t you join them in spirit and have your family portrait taken on the coming July 24th this year?
